The Model-Off-Duty Years Were Better

There was a time when airport style meant skinny jeans, leather trousers, oversized sunglasses, enormous handbags and very good outerwear.

Kate Moss, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Miranda Kerr and the Victoria’s Secret models made the early-2010s off-duty look instantly recognisable, whether they were leaving a show, crossing an airport or getting into a car.

The formula was simple. Something narrow on the bottom, something looser or oversized on top, then strong accessories. A leather jacket over skinny denim, a slouchy knit with leggings, a fitted tank under an oversized coat. The Balenciaga City bag, ankle boots, oversized scarves and Isabel Marant wedge sneakers gave even the simplest outfits enough character.

The accessories were a huge part of it. Bags were substantial, sunglasses covered half the face and shoes rarely disappeared into the background. The Balenciaga City, Chloé Paddington and Isabel Marant Bekett all became part of the wider model-off-duty wardrobe because they were instantly recognisable without requiring complicated styling around them.

What also made the photographs good was that the clothes looked lived in. Bags were full, jackets creased, hair moved and the outfits did not look overly controlled. The women were dressed well, but they were also going somewhere, and that gave the whole thing an ease that is difficult to manufacture.

Kate Moss brought the rockier version: skinny denim, boots, leather and outerwear that often looked better with some wear. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was more polished, pairing narrow trousers with structured coats, oversized sunglasses and expensive bags. Miranda Kerr leaned cleaner and more feminine, often using blazers, fitted knits and leather trousers while keeping the same basic proportions.

That is probably why the model-off-duty look still works now. The clothes themselves were never especially complicated. It was the balance: narrow trousers, oversized outerwear, strong accessories and enough ease that everything looked natural rather than styled within an inch of its life.

If you want the look now, the formula barely needs changing. Slim or skinny jeans, a great leather jacket or oversized coat, a substantial bag, dark sunglasses and shoes with some personality. The rest can stay very simple.

Indie Sleaze Style Was Never Just an Aesthetic

Indie Sleaze Style Was Never Just an Aesthetic

Indie sleaze did not begin with somebody choosing a moodboard. It came from gigs, clubs, bands, art schools, bad lighting, cigarettes, house parties, late nights and people getting dressed for whatever was actually happening next. The clothes looked lived in because the lives were lived in.
